Vision Fields: Dragon Story, Flash Light, Air-Water-Balloon

Dragon Story, 4:00, 2007
video, tripod

This small and intimate work consists of a video projector mounted on a tripod and set close to the wall so it projects an image twenty inches in size onto the wall. A single clear balloon is hung in front of the projector lens, which distorts the image as it passes through the balloon. The audio is of a small child telling a fantastical story.

Hundreds of clear balloons hang from the ceiling between the video projector and the wall creating a mesmerizing and obscuring effect that heightens the sense of being lost and helpless. The face of the child projected onto the balloons becomes fractured, distorted and hidden as the balloons sway in the air.

One video is a close-up of fingers pressing and poking into a water balloon. The other video presents images of childhood in a cliché manner such as small girl dancing, a pet dog and a boy being lifted into the air. The nostalgic and idealized soft focus images are placed directly next to the cold and anxious water balloon hands creating a contrast between what is known and what is seen.
